1. NITI Aayog has released the report titled ‘Preserving Progress on Nutrition in India: Poshan Abhiyan in Pandemic Times.’ ―The key highlights of the report are: 

Among the large states, Maharashtra has been ranked first in the overall implementation of the Poshan Abhiyaan.

 Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat are ranked second and third.

 12 out of the 19 large Indian states have Poshan Abhiyaan implementation score of more than 70 percent.

 Punjab and Bihar have been ranked at the bottom of the large states ranking. Among the small states, Sikkim has been ranked first.

 Dadar and Nagar Haveli has been ranked first among the UTs. 17 Indian states/UTs have full immunisation coverage (infants from 12 months to 23 months) of more than 75 percent. 

11 Indian states/UTs have full immunisation coverage (infants from 12 months to 23 months) of less than 25 percent. Many states are implementing the Take-Home Rations (THR) scheme of WCD.

 The coverage of THR is very low for states like Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Bihar etc. 16 states/UTs were treating 75 percent or more diarrhoea cases (children below five years of age) with ORS. 5 states/UTs were treating less than 25 percent of diarrhoea cases (children below five years of age) with ORS. 23 states/UTs have not even utilised 50 percent of the funds allocated under Poshan Abhiyaan.

 ―Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment or Poshan Abhiyaan was launched in 2018. It was launched for dealing with malnutrition in the country. It was part of the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS).

India has overtaken United Kingdom to become the fifth largest economy in the world. United Kingdom is now the sixth largest economy.
 ―In March this year, UK GDP was at USD 816 billion, whereas India’s GDP crossed USD 854.7 billion.
 ―This is based on the GDP and foreign exchange data supplied by the International Monetary Fund.
 ―The decline of GDP is UK is due to High inflation (highest in four decades). 
Increased recession risks (the recession might continue till 2024) ―At the same time, Indian economy is expected to grow at more than 7 percent this year.

    The State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) has cleared the Central Vista Executive Enclave project. While clearing the project, SEIAA has noted the removal of 60 percent of trees at the existing site.

-The Central Vista Executive Enclave will contain:

- Prime Minister’s Office

- Cabinet Secretariat

 -National Security Council Secretariat

- India House

 ―The execution of the project is with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

 ―Previously, SEIAA has sent the project back for re-examination of the Tree Transplantation Policy. ―SEAC sent the project back with its recommendations to the SEIAA:

 However, neither the site plan was changed not additional trees were retained.

 1.

 Kerala High Court has directed the CBSE and Kerala Government to include in curriculum a program for preventing sexual abuse.

 The program should be mandatory for all schools within Kerala. ―The Court has directed CBSE and Kerala Government to form a Committee of Experts. This Committee will look into the age appropriate way of providing the required information to students.

 The Committee will have to provide its recommendations within six months, The new program will have to be introduced from the next academic session.

 ―These directions were issued while hearing a bail application of an accused in a minor rape case.

 ―In this case the Court observed: Civilised society needs civic sense related to avoidance of sexual crimes.

 Providing this during the school years can help in creating better citizens. Such knowledge is imperative for fulfilling the purposes of POCSO Act and the various IPC amendments. 

 The Kerala High Court has rejected the petition for converting a commercial building into a religious place of worship. 

―The Court observed that: there were more than adequate number of places of worships in the state for all communities increase in places of worship will lead to shortage of residence for citizens. there were approximately 36 mosques within 5 km of the commercial property.

 ―This particular case involved conversion of the commercial property into mosques.

 ―The Court has also directed the Chief Secretary to prohibit change of buildings into places of worship except in rarest of rare cases. 

In such cases the concerned authority will have to submit a report .The report will have to mention the distance to the nearest place of worship of the similar religious grouping.

 ―The Government will have to stop illegal functioning of places of worship.

 

 2. 

.  In a significant move the Supreme Court of India has granted precedence to majority verdict of the larger bench over the verdicts by smaller benches.

 ―The key details regarding this judgement are:

- The judgement is based on the reading of Article 145(5) of the Indian Constitution.

-  The precedence will apply even if the decision of the smaller bench was unanimous.

- The precedence will apply even if the number of judges supporting majority decision in the larger bench were less than the number of judges in the unanimous smaller bench.

―This ruling was provided while hearing the petitions challenging Delhi Sales Tax Act.

The Supreme Court of India has expressed strong displeasure with the hate speeches on TV channel debates. ―According to the Court:  

-Visual media has become the chief medium of hate speech.  

-Government does not appear to be doing much for addressing this issue.

- Hate speech can take different forms.

- Hate speech on TV channels can have significant negative impact.

- Hate speech is attractive because it increases TRPs and as such profit.

―The Court has also expressed the desire to enact guidelines for controlling hate speech until suitable legislation is enacted.

The Court is considering something on the line of Vishaka case (guidelines against sexual harassment at workplace)

―This was done while hearing petitions asking for curb on hate speech in certain TV shows.

1.   The Centre Government has notified the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act.

―The Act allows for collection of the following information from accused and convicts:

- Finger prints, palm prints and foot prints

Iris and retina scan

- Physical and biological samples

Signatures and handwriting samples

. ―The samples can also be corrected from violators of Section 144 if the protestors are arrested and also charged with any other criminal offence.

―The collection can be taken with the prior approval of the police officer with the minimum rank of Superintendent of Police (SP).
